I repeat this twice a year and it took two years of doing that before I felt I got to a good place. Which brings me to the most important step…. Be proud of your progress and commit to do it again. As decluttering becomes a regular practice it gets easier to let things go. If you just can’t decide, keep it, at least for now. Some people might disagree with a maybe pile but I feel it speeds up the process as it avoids agonizing for too long.

Full disclosure I went through this process at least a half dozen times before I felt like I hit a sweet spot and had a repeatable process that worked. 6 simple steps to declutter clothesĪs I started to deal with my emotional baggage, I started to make progress decluttering. I needed to face that my past behavior did not make me feel good and that holding onto things didn’t fix my past mistakes. I was having a hard time letting go because it felt terrible to admit I was being thoughtless and wasteful with my money. Some of it didn’t fit me well, wasn’t a color I even liked or was just not needed.

I would shop for brand name bargains to pass the time.

Shopping had become a bit of a sport for me I was travelling a lot for work and it was lonely. We never went without but certainly didn’t have the newest and coolest in fashion.įinding myself with disposable income, I was placing a high value on brand name items. Growing up, we did not have a lot of disposable income and wore mostly hand me downs. Why this was so freaking hard?Īs I started to unpack why I was struggling I realized the reasons ran deep. Have you ever tried to clean out a closet and a voice in your head starts saying ‘you can’t get rid of that – it’s still new’ or ‘you might fit back into it’? How about ‘so and so gave that to you, you can’t throw that out’? Or my personal favorite….’you spent good money on that’!Įvery time I tried to let go this happened and I ended up keeping almost everything. My initial efforts were sabotaged by feelings that got stirred up whenever I tried to let go. The answer may be different for you but I’m willing to bet emotions are a big part of it. So one reason it’s so hard to declutter clothes is that we tend to accumulate so much of it! In this post, you can see visual proof (ouch to both the contents and quality…sorry, these pictures were taken long before I knew I’d have a blog someday):įloor to ceiling shelving in my walk in closet, two additional dressers, a mountain of dirty laundry waiting to be washed and a hallway closet jammed full of outerwear and shoes. In my post ‘ What is simple living?’ I confess to my former shopaholic tendencies and lay bare just how out of control my clothing situation was.
